SZA, Kendrick, and the Power of Hip-Hop Dance
The dancing at the SZA and Kendrick concert was absolutely mind-blowing. They mostly did forms of hip-hop, which was similar to the dancing we do in our hip-hop class. My dance teacher taught me about the five different types of hip-hop: krumping, tutting, breakdancing, house, and popping are the main ones. On stage, they mostly did old school breakdancing, popping, and house. These three consist of floor movements, chest popping, and also sharp robotic movements.
The musicality was just spectacular too! I would say with the musicality and hip-hop they do, our dancing is the exact same—just maybe not as advanced.
To compare with Cuban dancing, they both consist of a lot of passion. However, Cuban dancing is telling a story about nature, whereas hip-hop started as dancing battles on the street. Cuban dancing consists more of jazzy upright movements. Yes, hip-hop does have some faster rhythms too—it contains more stomping down low.
To conclude, hip-hop was the main dance being performed at the concert. There were many different types, and it was really neat that I was able to identify them while the concert was going on thanks to my dancing back in the studio.
